Hii, my name is Amy. I’m a Brazilian 23 y/o trans person, currently studying Computer Science. I was recently evicted from my apartment, and now I’m in debt from the costs of moving to a new apartment and restoring the old one, which is required in Brazil.
My mom was fired last year and lost her apartment, she has been living with me and I don’t have money for food for both of us, I need help for paying for our groceries and other costs. I’m almost out of money, and I just get paid in the 2th, I need for food, anything helps
I hate asking, but I’d be incredibly grateful for any support you can offer. Even small amounts help a lot because of the currency conversion!

I wonder if people even know or remember that companies were trying extremely hard in the 2000’s to gather data and were using tactics just as shady if not shadier than today. Mystery meat tracking JavaScript is as old as JavaScript. Toolbars that monitored your browsing, spyware, malware, even root kits, all to feed advertising networks just to see if their ads worked. Because you see, ad buyers pay for conversions. That is to say, if the ad worked, they pay for it.
And yes, data brokers existed. Then as now.

Any person in economics education that gets out of their Freshman year having not deeply assimilated the idea that all these models fall apart the moment they touch a human being needs to not be allowed to make decisions about money or policy at all.
Doing anything based on the median in the US will leave about 60% of the population in poverty. Even the 95th median to evict Musk and Bezos isn't going to work.
You can say "30k dollars is about 1-2% of the median lifetime income, it's an aberration on the long run" but that 30k dollars is "Pay off college debt" "Pay off medical debt" "Get that surgery" or "Move from this town that does not have drinkable water" for a very, very, very large amount of people. It's also "Save my house for the next year" for many more.
My Econ 101 prof put it perfectly: "The belief that in the long run the economy balances is crap; in the long run we're all dead". He said that on day one and suddenly all these numbers had a very real, human, vulnerable face.
Sadly the way I handled this knowledge was to get out of economics and just finish my minor as a matter of interest/elective; and maybe I should not have. I wouldn't have survived in that world though.
Or I would have turned into this idiot, pointing at charts in the face of ... going on 2,000 personal stories of "No it really would be life-changing"
