people sometimes shit on Nintendo a bit too much, as in like, yeah they fucking suck I’m not saying they don’t, but they’re a large enough corporation that not every time they make a game would it be something done to just suck your money dry. despite the corporation there are still people in the company that really do just want to make good and heartwarming games and please do Not tell people “well Nintendo sucks so” whenever they talk about their favourite game or wishes for more of what came out of there. that’s moral absolutism and you should never do that. that’d be like saying “well Microsoft is evil so every employee of theirs should burn in a fire” like that’s just not how it works.
saying that their games suck and you should never play them is like saying “Minecraft sucks because Microsoft sucks” and I’m friends with people that do say that and it bothers me a lot.
this is like when people shout about saving electricity – you are not saving electricity by turning off everything for an hour on a set day, you actually just cause damage to the electrical grid at worst and do nothing and become an insignificant dot on the statistics at best. You’re not affecting Microsoft or Nintendo by boycotting them because they only see numbers on the chart, and you know what you can’t change by boycotting? people playing the game.
people will play the games. you need to accept that. people won’t stop playing the game, statistically speaking. what you can do is yell at legislators to put a stop at exploitative practices, what you can do is harass the living daylight out of the company representatives and support channels and social media accounts because their entire job is to face the public.
“speaking with your money” doesn’t work because your words fall on deaf ears that belong to people with disposable income to keep buying videogames. you can talk all about how you shouldn’t buy them but their money cows will buy up whatever they put out anyway. that’s how exploitative practices work and this is day 1 of the lesson, you make people who have money continuously subscribe to your bullshit.
what does help is making them aware that the general public doesn’t fucking care about their shit and actively resent it, is telling them to fucking change or no one will buy their game again. shareholders will look at this and look at the diminishing growth of the companies (fun fact you can’t really just magically make appear more people with disposable income to buy up your vomit) and put pressure on the companies, because even if they don’t understand videogames or why people play them they can at least put together that “collectors will start dropping out if the games become irrelevant to the general public” to invest in gaming companies in the first place. and that isn’t helped by speaking with your money, it’s helped by making everyone else aware that people fucking hate the games.
SO STOP SHITTING ON GAMES THAT ARE ACTUALLY GOOD JUST BECAUSE IT’S MADE BY A SHITTY CORPORATION!! CORPORATIONS WILL ALWAYS BE SHITTG UNLESS THE LAWS FORCE THEM NOT TO BE, SO THE ACTUAL BIGGEST STEP HERE IS TO CALL UP YOUR LEGISLATORS AND MAKE A DENT IN THIS, IS TO PROTEST AND MAKE A NOISE, NOT TO BOYCOTT PEOPLE’S PURCHASING DECISIONS BECAUSE YOU’RE TALKING TO THE WRONG PEOPLE!!!!
