We can go even further. Apps? Flatpak+Flathub as well as Nix. Printers? CUPS with IPP+Zeroconf. Service management? Not just Systemd, stuff like Podman and Nix again helps massively and can be done graphically with e.g. Pods. P2P? A bit early, but on top of classics like IPv6, STUN+TURN, torrent and Syncthing, we got goddamn Automerge and p2panda.

And even software development has been massively streamlined, even if not flawless.

And it really helps you get start to finish, design and packaging included.

Honestly, the only thing I'm currently pessimistic about is ARM support. Newer Macs are struggling to get Asahi support, even if there's already basic M3/M4 support. The fact that Snapdragons lack SystemReady and are so hard to find distros for is also a massive pain point. And we don't even know what will happen with Mediatek-Nvidia laptops yet.

But that seems very much fixable.

There's also things like GJS, it's still very much not at the point where it should be, although at least you can *actually make programs in it* with regular conventions and packages nowadays

Otherwise, everything else is... yeah, very, VERY close.

I still think we need a massive rethinking of our operating systems, btw. Less apps, more distributed systems.

P.S.S.: wish we could have more static thingies, like everything was explicit, in-order parallelism (think RISC-V vectors and GPU pipelines) and deterministic protocols and Nix-like caching and stuffs, but: society ain't ready yet for that
