@twinkle we actually think that it's bad on a technical/backend level too: a direct message has an entirely different semantic meaning than "post only visible to person it mentions", in part because then you cannot talk about someone by handle without fucking bringing them into the thread.

@twinkle I do hope the mastodon redesign handles dms well, that’s basically the one thing in the blog post that I was somewhat worried about
